Matthew Stafford looking for big-time payday from Lions

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford plans to wait for Oakland Raiders Derek Carr to reset the quarterback market before finalizing a new deal, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports.

What It Means:

Stafford and Carr are both targeting top-tier money (Andrew Luck's average annual value is $24.5 million). The Lions are in the early stages of talks with Stafford but should get something done before training camp. Carr is younger and coming off a better 2016 so it's possible Detroit will want to give Stafford less than what he gets. Either way, Stafford's next deal will make him among the highest paid quarterbacks in the league.

Carr and Stafford were neck-and-neck in Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back in 2016, ranked ninth and tenth respectively in the metric among quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs.
