Darren Sproles expected to lead Eagles backfield again

Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles will remain "the top running back," guesses Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Daily News.

What It Means:

The Eagles only notable addition at running back this offseason was fourth-rounder Donnel Pumphrey. With Ryan Mathews' health perpetually in question and Wendell Smallwood not showing much during his rookie campaign, Sproles figures to lead Philadelphia's backfield committee again. He saw 146 touches in 2016 and should be right around that total again this season.

Sproles' 0.06 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per carry were first among Eagles backs with 30-plus carries in 2016, while he also boasted a 0.24 Reception NEP per target. As a team, Philadelphia finished 12th in schedule-adjusted Offensive Rushing NEP per play.
