Davis Webb becomes Giants' developmental quarterback with 87th pick
The New York Giants selected California quarterback Davis Webb with the 87th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.
Some people considered Webb -- 6'5", 229 pounds -- an outside option for the first-round, but the Giants get a steal here as they begin to plan for a post-Eli Manning future. Webb transferred to Cal after he was beaten out by Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech, and struggled with ball location and showed erratic pocket presence on tape. Webb "looks the part" but there's always a concern with Cal's spread translating to the NFL.
Webb earned a 5-7 record his single year as a Golden Bear, with a 61.6% completion rate, 6.9 yards per attempt, and 37 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. 39 quarterbacks dropped back at least 100 times this year, and Manning's Passing Net Expected Points per drop back ranked 24th among them.
