Panthers' Cam Newton needs surgery on throwing shoulder

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery on his throwing shoulder to repair a "partially torn rotator cuff," and is questionable for the start of training camp.

What It Means:

Newton initially injured his shoulder in Week 14. The team believed rest would heal the injury, but Newton will go under the knife on March 30 to fix the injury. He will not throw for three months and is expected to be very limited during training camp and the preseason. Newton should be good to go for Week 1, though.

After an MVP-worthy 2015, Newton took a step back last season. He threw for 3,509 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while rushing for just 359 yards. His net expected points total of 1.24 ranked 26th out of the 30 QBs who took 300 or more dropbacks.
