Tony Romo

Broncos may not pursue Cowboys' Tony Romo even if released

There's "no guarantee" the Denver Broncos will pursue Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo even if he becomes a free agent, according to NFL Network's James Palmer.

What It Means:

The Broncos have long been considered the favorites to land Romo but now they may be having second thoughts. The Cowboys are still trying to trade Romo, which has always been a deal breaker for general manager John Elway. Even if Romo hits the market, the Houston Texans might be a better fit, both for Romo's body and his family. Don't rule out Denver yet, but the Broncos seem open to moving forward with Trevor Siemian as a placeholder for eventual franchise quarterback Paxton Lynch.

Romo tossed -0.04 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back on 127 drop backs in 2015, but generated 0.16 Passing NEP per drop back on 684 such plays in 2014, so it's tough to gauge expectations for what will be the veteran's age-37 season. Siemian came in 26th in Passing NEP per drop back among the 39 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs in 2016.
