Chiefs expected to tag Eric Berry, let Dontari Poe hit open market
The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to franchise tag defensive back Eric Berry and let free agent defensive lineman Dontari Poe reach the market, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.
Berry has stated that he won't play in 2017 if the Chiefs tag him for a second consecutive year, but there are other free agents to sign and only one franchise tag to use. We'll see how he responds, but chances are Berry will be on the field for Kansas City come Week 1, with or without a long-term deal. Poe will see plenty of offers as a free agent.
The Chiefs defense ranked 10th-best in opponent-adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points allowed per play last season.
