Titans say running back job not an open competition
Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Mularkey said the team's starting running back job will not be opened to competition for 2017.
"DeMarco Murray is the guy," Mularkey stated. "He has shown he is the guy and he will continue to be that guy." In regards to what Derrick Henry's role will be like in his second season, Mularkey explained that "a lot is based on how we are going to attack the opponent." Henry averaged 4.5 yards per carry on 110 rush attempts last season, finishing with five touchdowns in his rookie campaign.
Among the 42 running backs to carry the ball at least 100 times last season, Henry finished 13th in Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per carry and Murray was two spots behind at 15th. As a team, the Titans were 14th in Adjusted Offensive Rushing NEP per play.
