49ers not looking for short-term quarterbacks like Matt Schaub

The San Francisco 49ers are not looking for a "short-term fix" at quarterback, head coach Kyle Shanahan said.

What It Means:

"You want to make a commitment to somebody," Shanahan said. "In order to do that, you better make sure you’re on the same page with everyone else and you put the time in, you talk to people who’ve been with these guys." These comments would seem to shoot down reports of Matt Schaub and Brian Hoyer being options. The 49ers could commit to an early-round pick like UNC's Mitch Trubisky and still have him compete with a veteran in camp.

Over Schaub's last 99 drop backs -- which have been spread across three years -- he's earned -0.13 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back. He hasn't posted a positive Passing NEP per drop back on more than five drop backs since 2012. Hoyer churned out 0.22 Passing NEP per drop back on 203 drop backs this year -- the eighth-best rate among quarterbacks to drop back at least 100 times.
