Tony Romo

Cowboys may elect to release Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will ultimately be released by the team this offseason, believes ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer.

What It Means:

The Cowboys would prefer to trade Romo, but he doesn't carry much trade value when potential suitors know Dallas has no intention of bringing him back next season. There's also added financial incentive, as Romo's mammoth $24.7 million cap hit could be spread out over the next two years if the veteran quarterback is designated as a post-June 1 cut.

It's unclear how good Romo is these days, so it remains to be seen what the Cowboys could get for their former star. In 2015, Romo tossed -0.04 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back on 127 drop backs, but generated 0.16 Passing NEP per drop back on 684 such plays in 2014.
