Saints bench Jairus Byrd, Vonn Bell draws start
New Orleans Saints free safety Jairus Byrd will be benched for Sunday's Week 4 game against the San Diego Chargers, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
The Saints' secondary has been an unmitigated disaster this year. After getting eaten up by Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman in Week 3, he'll watch this one from the sidelines. Byrd has been a colossal bust since joining the Saints as a free agent in 2014. Second-round rookie Vonn Bell will draw the start at free safety Sunday.
The Saints' defense ranks second-worst in the NFL in schedule-adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points (NEP) per-play, with 0.24. This is worse than their 2015 mark, which was the worst season-long rate since 2000.
