Donte Whitner visiting the Panthers on Friday

Free agent safety Donte Whitner will visit the Carolina Panthers on Friday.

What It Means:

Whitner was cut by the rebuilding Cleveland Browns in April, but he was serviceable in 2015. The visit may suggest that the Panthers are looking to improve upon the back-end of their secondary by upgrading third-year safety Tre Boston opposite Kurt Coleman. After making the Super Bowl with Roman Harper last season, Carolina figures Whitner can't be any worse. The 31-year-old veteran could potentially flourish in the Panthers' corner-friendly scheme. His only other visit came with the Los Angeles Rams earlier this month, but they reportedly didn't like his asking price.

Whitner racked up 81 total tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2 passes defensed in 14 games last year for the Browns. The Panthers' defense is looking to sustain their -35.60 Adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points from last season, which ranked second in the league.
