Ryan Fitzpatrick not expected to re-sign with Jets before training camp

Free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is not expected to re-sign with the New York Jets before their training camp begins on Wednesday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

What It Means:

There seems to be a big disconnect in how much leverage each side thinks Fitzpatrick has in the negotiations. The Jets appear to be the only likely landing spot for the 33-year-old quarterback, but they also seem content to start Geno Smith if Fitzpatrick doesn't sign a deal they like.

Smith has never finished above the league average in Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per dropback, and while the Jets may be willing to let Smith start, Fitzpatrick, whose 0.14 Passing NEP per dropback in 2015 was a career-high, would likely be much better for the offense this season.
