Mark Sanchez

Broncos quarterback competition is wide open

The Denver Broncos quarterback competition is "wide open," reports Broncos.com's Andrew Mason.

What It Means:

Mason cautioned to not "assume" Mark Sanchez will be named the Broncos' Week 1 starter, and he doesn't anticipate Denver coach Gary Kubiak making any announcements until the preseason is underway. Kubiak plans to "spread the reps around," giving Sanchez, Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian equally long looks. "When he says it's going to be an open competition, he means it," Mason said of Kubiak. "Don't assume anything." With Sanchez (thumb surgery) sitting out OTAs, Lynch and Siemian are seeing expanded practice work.

Sanchez had an ugly -0.05 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back rate in 2015 on 100 drop backs, ranking 41st out of the 46 qualified quarterbacks.
