Redskins think Matt Jones can be an every-down back

Washington Redskins running back Matt Jones has the potential to be an "every-down back," according to Redskins' offensive coordinator Sean McVay.

What It Means:

Jones was one of the veteran winners of the draft. The Redskins drafted only Keith Marshall in the seventh round -- and added no running backs in free agency -- so Jones is set up for a huge workload if he hangs onto the ball and improves on last year's poor efficiency. "He had some growing pains, but I think, when you look at the things he was able to do both in the run game and in the pass game, he’s got the skills and traits you’re looking for in that every-down back," said McVay. "He’s a violent finisher. I think he’s a little bit more sudden than people give him credit for." Marshall and Chris Thompson, a passing-game guru, are Jones' only competition as of now.

Jones fumbled five times as a rookie and averaged a meager 3.40 yards per carry. Among backs with at least 100 rushing attempts, Jones ranked dead last in Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per carry. However, among backs with at least 25 targets, he checked in first in Reception NEP per target. If he can maintain the efficiency in the passing game and get the volume of a lead back, Jones will be a valuable commodity in 2016.
