Washington gives up on Chris Culliver after one year

The Washington Redskins released cornerback Chris Culliver.

What It Means:

Culliver signed a "four-year, $32 million contract" last March, but tore his ACL and MCL in November. The remaining guarantees in his contract were voided by a Week 2 suspension for violating the league's personal-conduct policy. Culliver was excellent in 2014, and is still only 27. He'll get a second chance, but will have to be healthy first. Washington used a third-round pick on Virginia Tech cornerback Kendall Fuller and signed free-agent cornerback Josh Norman.

Washington's pass defense ranked 9th worst last season according to our metrics, and it was an area they clearly tried to address by bringing in Norman and Fuller.
