Sterling Shepard lands with the Giants

The New York Giants selected former Oklahoma wideout Sterling Shepard with the No. 40 overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft.

What It Means:

The Giants had to add a pass-catching complement for Odell Beckham, and Shepard was one of the best receiver prospects available. He made 41 starts for the Sooners, parlaying 233 career catches into 3,482 yards (14.9 yards per grab) and 26 touchdowns. Shepard confirmed his explosive athleticism in Indy, running 4.48 with a 41-inch vertical and 10-foot-3 broad jump.

Identified as the draft's best route runner by noted receiver guru Matt Harmon, Shepard has been compared to Julian Edelman, Jarvis Landry and Wes Welker. He has all the traits of a high-volume inside-the-numbers pass catcher. Ostensibly, the Giants are a great fit as he will play the Randall Cobb role, working underneath off of an explosive outside playmaker. Giants' coach Bob McAdoo was in Green Bay when the Packers selected Cobb.
