Spurs' Pau Gasol scores 23 points as Spain loses to Team USA
San Antonio Spurs center Pau Gasol scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting with two 3-pointers, eight boards, two assists, one steal and one block in 29 minutes on Friday in a 76-82 loss to the United States.
Gasol's calf injury didn't slow him down during the semifinals, as he came out red hot from the get go. The Spanish ultimately put up a great fight but were not quite good enough to best a deep Team USA. Spain will play Australia in the Bronze Medal game Sunday, while the United States will play Serbia in the Gold Medal game.
Gasol is averaging 17.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 blocks in 27.1 minutes per game in the Olympics. The Spanish big man posted 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game last year in Chicago, but with a .481 effective field goal percentage, the second-worst mark of his career.
