Mets' Jason Vargas (hand) pitches in intrasquad game
New York Mets starting pitcher Jason Vargas (hand) struck out 12 batters over six hitless innings during an intrasquad game on Monday.
Vargas will need regular rest before likely turning in a minor league rehab start and then possibly returning to the Mets' rotation against the San Diego Padres at the end of the month (April 27-29). The 35-year-old left-hander opened the year on the disabled list due to a fracture in his right hand.
numberFire's models project Vargas to record a 4.83 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 96 strikeouts and 41 walks while going 8-8 across 122 2/3 innings.
