Mets' Rafael Montero tears right UCL, will undergo Tommy John surgery
New York Mets reliever Rafael Montero tore the UCL in his right elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery.
Montero received the diagnosis on Thursday after experiencing some discomfort in his most recent Grapefruit League outing. The 27-year-old former top prospect was competing for a spot in the Mets' bullpen but will now likely be out through the beginning of the 2019 season.
Montero recorded a 5.52 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, and 20.7 strikeout percentage across 119 innings last season while going 5-11 in 18 starts (34 appearances).
