Mets' Jason Vargas has fractured bone in glove hand

New York Mets starting pitcher Jason Vargas has a non-displaced fracture of the hamate bone in his right hand, a CT scan revealed.

What It Means:

Vargas suffered the injury on Friday when he was plunked on his hand by a comebacker. "He’ll either pitch through it or he’ll have it surgically repaired," general manager Sandy Alderson said. X-rays initially came back negative but the 35-year-old left-hander will see a hand specialist on Sunday after the Mets did some further testing. It's his non-throwing hand but Vargas still may be sidelined to open the year.

numberFire's models project Vargas to record a 4.83 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 18.3 strikeout percentage while going 9-9 across 143 2/3 innings.
