Jake Arrieta

Cubs could try to extend Jake Arrieta this winter

The Chicago Cups "will try to lock up" pitcher Jake Arrieta over the offseason, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

What It Means:

Arrieta is arbitration-eligible this year, but the Cubs may opt to forego that for a long-term deal. Arrieta will be entering his age-30 season in 2016.

Arrieta has certainly earned some extra dough. He finished 2015 with a 2.61 xFIP, besting his 2.73 mark from last year. He cut his walks to 1.89 per nine innings while increasing his ground-ball rate to 56.2 percent. Arrieta won't be cheap to extend, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be worth it.
