Masahiro Tanaka lasts only five innings in Yankees' loss to Astros

New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka lasted only five innings Tuesday, allowing two runs, as the Yankees were eliminated by the Houston Astros in the American League Wild Card Game.

What It Means:

Tanaka allowed four hits while striking out three and walking three. Both runs scored on homers, one by Colby Rasmus and one by Carlos Gomez.

The homers will happen -- that's what the Astros do. The surprise here was the three walks. Tanaka only walked multiple batters in 8 of his 24 regular-season starts, and this was only the fifth time in his career in which he walked at least three batters. Tanaka saw his xFIP inflate to 3.29 this year from 2.58 in his rookie campaign. The walks shouldn't be too big of a concern moving forward, and Tanaka's numbers this year were still excellent overall.
