Justin Verlander fans 10 in Tigers' Opening Day win
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander struck out 10 batters over 6 1/3 innings in a 6-3 Opening Day victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.
The Tigers and White Sox were rained out on Monday and the extra day of rest served Verlander well as the veteran right-hander recorded his 38th career double-digit strikeout game and the first by a Tigers pitcher on Opening Day in almost 50 years. He allowed just six hits and two runs while tossing 102 pitches.
Verlander is projected by numberFire's models for 15 wins, a 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 209 punchouts in 205 innings pitched over the remainder of the season.
