Athletics say bullpen roles will be 'fluid'
Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that the roles in the bullpen this season will likely be "fluid."
Melvin conceded that Ryan Madson would likely be the primary closer to open the year, but it sounds like Santiago Casilla, Sean Doolittle, John Axford and others could all be in the conversation. Madson turned in 30 saves -- in 37 opportunities -- last season.
As a unit, Oakland's bullpen posted a 4.01 ERA last season, 11th-worst in the MLB. Madson's 3.62 ERA was his worst mark since the 2006 season.
