Pirates' Francisco Cervelli (foot) cleared for some baseball activities

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli (foot) has been cleared for "modified baseball activities," trainer Todd Tomczyk said.

What It Means:

Cervelli felt discomfort in his right foot during a workout this past Sunday. The Pirates would like to make sure that this won't be a lingering issue before they give him the all-clear to catch for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic this spring. The club will proceed with caution here, as Cervelli hasn't exactly proven to be the most durable of players.

Last season, Cervelli appeared in just 101 games due to injury concerns. He saw 393 plate appearances and assembled an empty .264/.377/.322 slash line, which would have been more impressive with more than one home run. His six stolen bases last year were worthy of praise, though.
