Aledmys Diaz away from Cardinals after Jose Fernandez's death
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz traveled to Miami on Monday to be with family and close friends following the tragic passing of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, Mike Matheny said on Tuesday.
"That was a place he needed to be today," explained Matheny. Diaz grew up with Fernandez, who was killed early Sunday morning in a devastating boating accident. Jedd Gyorko will replace him at shortstop.
Diaz owns a .301/.370/.510 slash and impressive .880 OPS during his first year in the majors. He's combined that with 16 home runs and 66 RBI's across 435 plate appearances.
