Syndergaard brilliant as Mets complete series sweep

Noah Syndergaard pitched eight dominant innings in the national spotlight Sunday night, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out nine.

What It Means:

Both of the runs he allowed came off of solo home runs - one to Anthony Rendon in the first, and another to Yunel Escobar in the seventh. Aside from that, the 22 year old was essentially perfect. Syndergaard, who was acquired by the Mets along with Travis d'Arnaud in the R.A. Dickey trade with the Blue Jays, has been incredible so far in the majors and is making a strong case for Rookie of the Year. He's 6-5 with a 2.66 ERA and a 2.92 xFIP, and a very impressive 9.51 K/9. He averages 96.1 miles per hour on his fastball, second only to Nathan Eovaldi, and has composure far beyond his years on the mound. He's immediately reached ace status from a fantasy perspective.

Following the three-game sweep of the division rival Nationals, the Mets are now 55-50 and in a virtual tie for first place. On July 27th, we had the Mets' playoff chances at 39.2%. Since the Cespedes trade, and smaller acquisitions of Kelly Johnson, Juan Uribe, and Tyler Clippard, the Mets have boosted their playoff chances to 61.0%. Their World Series chances have skyrocketed from below 2% to 4.4%. By our metrics now, the Mets have the eighth best chance to win the World Series among all MLB teams. Now that the Mets have an above-average offense to go along with their incredible pitching rotation, it seems as if they will be a force to be reckoned with for a long time, starting now.
