Lucas Giolito expected to return for Nationals on Sunday

Washington Nationals pitcher Lucas Giolito is expected to start Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.

What It Means:

Giolito will be replacing Reynaldo Lopez in the Nationals' rotation, as he was demoted to the minors on Thursday. His stay in the rotation likely won't be for long with both Stephen Strasburg (elbow) and Joe Ross (shoulder) on the cusp of returning, but he'll likely stick around as a reliever with rosters set to expand soon.

The 22-year-old right-hander made three starts for Washington in June, but after allowing nine walks in 11 innings, the Nationals opted to send him down to the minors to work on his control. In five contests for Triple-A Syracuse since that demotion, Giolito recorded a 3.57 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 29.5 strikeout percentage across 22 2/3 innings of work.
