David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia out Thursday afternoon for Boston

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and second baseman Dustin Pedroia are both out of the lineup for Thursday's afternoon matchup with the Detroit Tigers.

What It Means:

The Red Sox were already facing a quick turnaround by having a Thursday matinee scheduled in Detroit after playing a night game in Baltimore on Wednesday. A rain-delay Wednesday night made that turnaround even shorter, leading to Ortiz and Pedroia taking a seat against the Tigers. Sandy Leon is filling in at DH for Boston, while Deven Marrero will start at second base and bat eighth. Aaron Hill will lead things off.

Ortiz currently ranks fifth in the majors with a 3.70 nERD. He owns a .307 ISO (ranks first in MLB) and .420 wOBA (tied for first) in 463 plate appearances this season, both of which are well above his career-averages. Pedroia is working with a .306/.371/.449 slash and .356 wOBA in 521 appearances at the plate on the year.
