Yankees' Mark Teixeira set to announce retirement Friday

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will announce his retirement on Friday, effective at the end of the season, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

What It Means:

The retirement will coincide with the completion of his eight-year, $180 million contract with the Yankees. At 36-years-old, Teixeira probably has another year or two left in him, but it appears the decision has been made to turn the chapter and move on to a post-baseball life. In 14 MLB seasons, he has recorded 404 home runs, good for 7th among active players and 55th most all-time.

Teixeira has suffered from some severe regression this season, seeing his slash fall to .198/.287/.340 (303 plate appearances), after hitting .255/.357/.548 (462 plate appearances) last season during a 2015 campaign that earned him an All-Star bid. He slugged 31 jacks and 79 RBI's last year, but our models currently project him to finish 2016 with 16 homers and 45 RBI's.
