Tigers interested in Reds pitcher Mike Leake

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports the Tigers have Reds starting pitcher Mike Leake "on their radar" if they determine that they are still playoff contenders.

What It Means:

According to our algorithm the Tigers currently have an 8.5% chance of making the playoffs, which is 9th best among AL teams and far behind the team one spot ahead of them, the Baltimore Orioles at 24%.

Tigers starters rank 26th in ERA (4.52), 18th in xFIP (4.03), and 23rd in strikeouts per nine innings (6.84). Leake has a 3.78 ERA and a 3.94 FIP this season, so he would be a solid addition. xFIP isn't a great indicator of performance for Leake, as his career home run to ball ratio is well above league average at 13.7%. However, he keeps the ball in the park with a 52 percent groundball rate and a 27.4% hard hit rate. His 1.84 nERD would be second the Tigers staff behind David Price.
