Rays activate closer Alex Colome (biceps)

The Tampa Bay Rays activated reliever Alex Colome from the 15-day disabled list.

What It Means:

Tendinitis in Colome's right biceps kept him out for the minimum 15 days, but he's ready to return to his ninth inning role, with Ryan Garton shifting back to his normal setup role. In a full-time relief role -- Colome made 13 starts last season -- the 27 year-old has been excellent this season, going 19-for-19 in save opportunities, and posting a sparkling 1.76 ERA across 30 2/3 innings. He has likely stolen the closer job from Brad Boxberger, who is out with a strained oblique, and will probably take on a setup role when he returns.

Colome owns a 2.68 xFIP and an impressive 31.2 strikeout percentage (league average is 21.0) this season. Our models project him to record a 2.76 ERA and a 23.3 strikeout percentage over the remaining course of the season.
