Marlins close to acquiring Padres' reliever Fernando Rodney

The Miami Marlins are nearing a deal to acquire reliever Fernando Rodney from the San Diego Padres, ESPN's Keith Law hears.

What It Means:

According to Law, San Diego will receive "a good A-ball prospect" in return. The Padres have no intention of winning anything meaningful this year, and their farm system needs an influx of talent.

Rodney has allowed just one earned run over 28 2/3 innings, but his fantasy value will be crushed with this move as he figures to slide into a setup role with Miami, who employs A.J. Ramos as its closer. In San Diego, either Ryan Buchter or Brandon Maurer will likely get the chance to close.
