Alex Cobb (elbow) nearing rehab assignment for Rays

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (elbow) threw another bullpen session Monday.

What It Means:

Cobb is recovering from Tommy John surgery and Monday's bullpen session was his second so far, with his next expected to take place on Thursday. If he avoids any setbacks, a rehab assignment in the minors will be his next step. Cobb looks like he'll be ready to return to the Rays in August and build on his 2.87 ERA from 2014.

In 143 1/3 innings in 2013, Cobb posted a superb 3.02 xFIP. He followed that up with a 3.33 xFIP in 166 1/3 innings in 2014. His strikeout percentage in 2013 was 23.2, and in 2014, it was 21.9, both of which are higher than last season's league average of 20.4 percent. Our models currently project him to record a 4.35 ERA and a mediocre 15.5 strikeout percentage once he returns.
