Ryan Madson gets mashed in the ninth, Athletics fall 6-5
Oakland Athletics pitcher Ryan Madson was crushed for a two-run, walk-off home run by Leonys Martin in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
The Athletics took a 5-2 lead after six innings and looked poised for the win, but a two-run home run by Robinson Cano in the eighth drew the Mariners to within 5-4 and set the stage for a very, very sudden collapse by Madson in the ninth inning. After recording the first two outs in the frame, Oakland's closer surrendered a double to Nori Aoki. Next batter up was Martin and that was all she wrote.
Madson still holds a 2.66 ERA (it was 1.83 before Tuesday's fateful homer) and is 11-for-13 in save chances across 20 1/3 total innings. He holds a 16.47 strikeout percentage that our models project to improve to 20.40 by the end of the year.
