Rays' Kevin Kiermaier undergoes left hand surgery
Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier underwent surgery Tuesday to repair two fractures in his left hand.
Kiermaier broke two metacarpal bones in his glove hand Saturday while trying to rob James McCann of a hit and is expected to be sidelined for the next 8-10 weeks. Mikie Mahtook started in center field on Monday night and Brandon Guyer drew the nod there Tuesday afternoon. Tampa Bay can feature a number of different looks, but Kiermaier is one of the best defenders in baseball at any position. It's a huge loss.
Kiermaier was slashing .236/.307/.447 prior to the injury, with five home runs, six steals, and a .325 wOBA in 137 plate appearances this season. Known more for his glove, Kiermaier had a 14.1 Ultimate Zone Rating in runs above average per 150 Defensive Games, which ranks fifth-best among center fielders this season.
