Jacob deGrom labors through five innings in Mets' defeat

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom tasted defeat for the first time this season as he fell to 3-1, yielding three runs on eight hits over five innings in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the San Diego Padres.

What It Means:

DeGrom seemingly had everything working in his favor for this one -- facing a punchless offense in a pitcher-friendly park -- but he was unable to deliver with a big outing. Thursday's start was deGrom's shortest of the young season. The 27-year-old right-hander struck out two and walked one in what was a relatively subdued performance.

After posting SIERAs of 3.19 and 2.99 in each of the last two seasons, deGrom owns a 3.97 SIERA through 22 2/3 frames this year. The biggest culprit has been his strikeout percentage, which sits at 17.2 percent after being at 27.3 percent in 2015. We see him bouncing back and project him to post a 22.5 strikeout percentage and 3.27 ERA over the remainder of the season.
