Boston's Pablo Sandoval to undergo shoulder surgery

Pablo Sandoval will require surgery on his ailing left shoulder.

What It Means:

Sandoval got the bad news Monday during a follow-up exam with Dr. James Andrews. The extent of the damage isn't yet known, but Travis Shaw is now locked in as the regular third baseman. Sandoval is still owed $53 million from 2017-'19 with $17 million club option or a $5 million buyout for 2020.

Sandoval had a disastrous first season in Boston, slashing .245/.292/.366 with just a .288 wOBA in 126 games last year. His -2.0 Wins Above Replacement ranked dead last. In 100 appearances, Shaw is hitting .322/.390/.533 with a .400 wOBA and 17 RBI's.
