Aroldis Chapman, Yankees settle at $11.325 million
The New York Yankees and left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $11.325 million contract.
The compromise is slightly in Chapman's favor as it's $275,000 over the midpoint at which the two sides filed. The flame-throwing 28-year-old southpaw will make up one of the most dominant bullpen trios in the league, joining Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances. He's expected to begin the season in the closer's role, but he could face disciplinary action from the league under the new domestic violence policy.
Per nine innings in 2014, Chapman fanned 15.74 hitters and walked 4.48 in 66 1/3 frames with the Cincinnati Reds. His 1.63 ERA was the second-best mark of his career, and his 2.5 Wins Above Replacement was second among qualifying relievers. In a testament to how good he's been in his career, Chapman finished with a pretty 2.49 xFIP, but it was actually the second-worst clip of his career.
