Giants, Brandon Belt avoid arbitration with one-year deal

The San Francisco Giants and first baseman Brandon Belt avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract.

What It Means:

Belt and the Giants had an arbitration hearing scheduled for Wednesday, but it was not needed as they worked out a last-minute deal. The specifics of the contract are not yet known, but when figures were exchanged last month, Belt requested $7.5 million and the Giants offered $5.3 million. He'll be under team control through the 2017 season.

Belt posted a .359 wOBA and hit a career high 18 home runs in 137 games last season. His 4.3 Wins Above Replacement ranked eighth among all first basemen.
