Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) throws off a mound

New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw off a mound on Tuesday.

What It Means:

It's the first time he's thrown off the bump since he underwent surgery back in October to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. Tanaka might be a little behind others in spring training, but he's fully expected to be ready to roll come Opening Day.

After a stellar rookie season in 2014, Tanaka's numbers rose across the board last season, although they were still solid. He posted a 3.29 xFIP, striking out 139 hitters and walking 27 in 154 innings. As long as he can stay healthy, he should be effective again in 2016.
