Jason Castro loses arbitration case, will make $5 million for Astros
Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro lost his arbitration hearing and will make $5 million in 2016.
The two sides exchanged arbitration figures last month, with Castro requesting $5.25 million -- not a large a difference -- but a hearing was unavoidable after an agreement failed to be reached. Castro will now be eligible for free agency following the 2016 season.
Castro struggled to a .284 wOBA in 375 plate appearances in 2015, his lowest total in any season in which he played at least 87 games. He did hit 11 home runs, but his home run total has dropped each of the past two seasons. Castro is valuable as a defender, however, as his 10.6 Defensive Rating on FanGraphs was fifth best among all catchers last season.
