Mat Latos

White Sox sign free agent Mat Latos

The Chicago White Sox have signed free agent pitcher Mat Latos, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

What It Means:

The deal is for one-year at $3 million and doesn't come with any incentives, according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish. Despite posting a 4.95 ERA last season over 116 1/3 innings with the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels, Latos will provide Chicago with rotational depth at a cheap price. Considering his cost, this is a worthy gamble by the White Sox.

Although Latos had a high ERA last season, his xFIP of 3.69 suggests it should have been significantly lower. He was stung by the long ball as his 11.6 Home-Run-to-Fly-Ball Ratio was well above his career average of 8.8. A healthy Latos is a good bounce back candidate for 2016.
