Reds still preparing with Brandon Phillips as starter

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips will open the 2016 season with the club.

What It Means:

Reds' manager Bryan Price said Sunday there have been no recent trade discussions regarding Phillips, and the club is preparing to enter the season with him entrenched as the starting second baseman. This is bad news for Jose Peraza. It's believed Peraza is ready to have a regular role in the majors, but he has no position to play if Phillips is also on the field. Phillips, 35 years-old, has vetoed trades twice this offseason, and it appears he wants to remain in Cincinnati for the two remaining years on his deal. The rebuilding Reds owe him $27 million over these final two years.

Phillips posted a wOBA of just .315 but was still worth 2.6 Wins Above Replacement. He hit 12 home runs and stole 23 bases -- his most since 2009 -- in 148 games, but his 0.45 nERD ranked 140th.
