Mariners acquire Tom Murphy from Giants
The Seattle Mariners have acquired catcher Tom Murphy from the San Francisco Giants for pitching prospect Jesus Ozoria.
Murphy was designated for assignment twice in less than a week, first by the Colorado Rockies and then by the Giants. Turning 28 next week, Murphy has a decent chance of displacing David Freitas as the Mariners' starting backstop versus southpaws. Murphy is just a .219 career hitter in the majors (81 games), compared to .256 in the minors (105 games).
Murphy slashed .226/.250/.387 with 2 home runs, 11 RBI, and 5 runs scored over 96 plate appearances for the Rockies last season.
