Athletics sign reliever John Axford
The Oakland Athletics have signed veteran reliever John Axford, pending a physical, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
What It Means:
No word yet on the terms involved. Axford was recently cut loose by the Colorado Rockies after a stuttering 2015 season. His control has been really shaky the past two years, but getting out of Denver should help him control his pitches and dampen his home runs allowed. He's the latest addition in Oakland's revamped bullpen.
Over 55 2/3 innings this past season, Axford posted a 4.20 ERA, 3.57 FIP, 10.02 strikeouts-per-nine rate and 5.17 walks-per-nine. He ended the season with 25 saves.
