3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Players to Avoid on 8/13/19

While we have plenty of pieces geared towards guys you should target in your DFS contests, it's also important to narrow down your short list of plays and avoid the suboptimal ones who are overpriced and/or in tough spots.

Let's check out three guys to consider fading on tonight's FanDuel main slate.

Jose Quintana, P, Chicago Cubs

FanDuel Price: $8,900

Jose Quintana is coming off one of his strongest starts of the season, hurling seven innings and allowing only one run against the Oakland Athletics. However, the lefty has been inconsistent this year and is striking out only 20.1% of batters he faces. Further limiting his upside is the fact that Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies, tends to favor hitters. The Phillies are also one of the more disciplined teams in the league as they walk in 9.4% of plate appearances, the sixth-best mark in baseball.

Instead of Quintana, consider starting Jack Flaherty ($8,900), who has a more favorable matchup against the lowly Kansas City Royals.

J.D. Martinez, OF, Boston Red Sox

FanDuel Price: $4,400

There is no doubting that J.D. Martinez is an offensive powerhouse, but a closer examination of the numbers suggest he is overpriced on today's slate. Facing righty Mike Clevinger of the Cleveland Indians presents a difficult matchup for Martinez, who has a .344 wOBA against righties, compared to an insane .532 clip against lefties. On top of that, Clevinger has held righties to a .232 wOBA and surrendered only two home runs in 30 innings.

Paying up for Cody Bellinger ($4,600) or saving money with Max Kepler ($4,000) both present better options.

Gio Urshela, 3B, New York Yankees

FanDuel Price: $4,400

Giovanny Urshela has hit seven home runs in his last eight games in the midst of his surprise breakout season. His hot streak has bumped his price into the neighborhood of the elite third baseman, which is exactly why he should be avoided today. Urshela has reverse splits and is facing lefty John Means, who has experienced success in his rookie season for the Baltimore Orioles. Although the matchup isn't terrible, the ability to play Nolan Arenado at Coors Field for the same price should not be passed up.
